What is Dragon Age: The Veilguard?

dreadwolf concept art dragon age dreadwolf wiki guide 300px

The game was previously known as The Dread Wolf Rises or Dragon Age 4. It was first announced in 2018 with a teaser trailer during the Game Awards where it highlighted the Iyrium idol which is known to be a dwarven artifact that was discovered by the Champion of Kirkwall in the events that happened in Dragon Age II. The teaser trailer then showed a mural of what seems to be a representation of the dreadwolf, a humanoid character wielding a staff and what is assumed to possess magical abilities, and the aforementioned idol at the center of it.

Who is the Dreadwolf?

Solas, the Dread Wolf. Some say he might be an ancient elven god, but some say not. Others say a betrayer of his people…or a savior who now seeks to rescue them at the cost of your world. His motives are inscrutable and his methods are sometimes questionable, earning him a reputation as something of a trickster deity — a player of dark and dangerous games.

Whether you’re new to Dragon Age™ stories or you’ve experienced them all, using Solas’s namesake no doubt suggests a spectrum of endless possibilities on where things may go. But at the core of this, like every past game, is you. If you’re new to Dragon Age, you have no need to worry about not having met our antagonist just yet. He’ll properly introduce himself when the time is right, but we did hint at his return when we announced 4.

Following Dragon Age: Inquisition

Beginning the events of Dragon Age: Inquisition, the Conclave is destroyed by an enormous explosion that creates a hole in the Veil, the Veil being the metaphysical boundary between the physical world and the Fade, the world of spirits and demons (also known as the Breach). This is where we find the player's character who is the sole survivor from the destructive blast, causing a mark to appear on (you) the player's hand that can close the rifts that have appeared from the Breach. With this, you are tasked to close several rifts from preventing chaos to spread. Witnesses on the other hand have claimed that (you) the player, were ushered out of the Fade by a mysterious female figure who is rumored to be Andraste, the historical Bride of the Maker — and upon closing several rifts, you are now referred to as the Herald of Andraste.

Moving forward, Leliana and Cassandra Pentaghast invoke one of the Divine's last orders to re-establish the Inquisition, an organization originally formed to defend against the dangers of magic and heretics. As the breach was closed with the help of rebel mages, also known as the remnants of the Templar order, Haven began to crumble as it was attacked by forces led by Corypheus, an ancient Darkspawn mage, who was responsible for opening the Breach. This was easy enough for Corypheus to breach through the defenses and confronted the Herald since he had help from a dragon.

The story then unfolds and we learn that Corypheus refers to the mark as the Anchor and he wishes to use its power to physically enter the Fade to apotheosis himself or to transform himself into a divine being. There, he attempts to remove the Anchor with a magical orb-shaped elven artifact, but the Herald sets off an avalanche, burying Haven and destroying Corypheus's army. While Solas leads the survivors to the abandoned fortress of Skyhold, which becomes the Inquisition's new base of operations — this sets an important event in motion where the Herald is now appointed as the Inquisitor, the leader of the Inquisition.

The Inquisitor then sets off on a mission to investigate the disappearance of the Grey Wardens with the help of Hawke, and there, they discover that they are being manipulated by Corypheus into raising an army of demons. This encounter starts a battle against the Wardens and the Inquisitor enters the Fade which causes his/her memories to return. The Inquisitor then discovers that they have acquired the Anchor at the Conclave after stumbling onto a ritual being carried out on Divine Justinia V by Corypheus, also coming into contact with the orb. Moving through the events, Hawke or their Grey Warden ally sacrifices themselves to help the others escape the Fade — leading to an event where the Inquisitor must choose to either kill or recruit the rest of the Wardens.

You, the Inquisitor, also attend a ball at the Winter Palace as a mission to attempt in resolving the ongoing Orlesian civil war and gain the assistance of Orlesian forces, following the events that took place in this quest, the Empress' arcane advisor, Morrigan, joins the Inquisition as an Imperial liaison. She then advises the Inquisitor to head towards the Temple of Mythal to stop Corypheus from obtaining an Eluvian, an artifact that could enable him to enter the Fade. Upon arriving at the temple, events take place where the Inquisitor or Morrigan acquires the powers of the Well of Sorrows, a store of magical energies tied to the elven goddess Mythal and the party escapes Corypheus through the Eluvian, which shatters behind them.

homepage inquisition story so far image3 dragon age dreadwolf wiki guide minhomepage inquisition story so far image4 dragon age dreadwolf wiki guide min

Later, it is revealed that Mythal is Morrigan's mother Flemeth and that whoever drinks from the Well of Sorrows receives the wisdom from previous servants of Mythal, but also binds them to her will. The party also discovers that Corypheus' dragon is the key to stopping him. This sets the encounter into motion when the Inquisitor confronts Corypheus just as he is about to open the breach, a battle arises and eventually, Corypheus is killed alongside his dragon, as well as permanently closing the Breach. In its process, the orb that was being carried by Corypheus becomes irreversibly damaged — the Inquisition then returns to Skyhold to celebrate their victory, and we also see a horrified Solas, who disappears after recovering the said artifact.

As an epilogue follows that is being narrated by Morrigan, it shows the following decisions made by you, the Inquisitor, throughout major decision-making, and a post-credits scene also follows where we find Flemeth and Solas, who is the Dread Wolf Fen'Harel, known to be a dormant deity figure and the original owner of the orb. Their meeting and conversation reveal that Solas is indirectly responsible for the events of the Inquisition, as he had allowed the artifact to come into Corypheus' possession so that it could be unlocked on his behalf — Solas then petrifies Flemeth and seemingly absorbs Mythal's power.

Everything You Need To Know... So Far

Dragon Age in Production

The game was previously known as The Dread Wolf Rises, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, or Dragon Age 4.

In February of 2022, an official blog post, published by BioWare confirmed that the game is in the mid-production phase of its development which is a great update, advising fans of the series that the fourth installment to the series is making progress. On June 2022, the game's title was announced to be Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and more details would be revealed at some point in 2022. Following October of 2022, gave publisher EA (Electronic Arts and developer BioWare confirmed that they have reached their alpha milestone, meaning that the game is playable from start to finish, making it a major achievement in both companies' progress of game development.

Electronic Arts had previously mentioned that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will not be complete by the end of 2022 but instead, the targeted release year would be 2023. The said year for the game's release date has been confirmed and backed up by Venturebeat journalist, Jeff Grub. As 2022, comes to an end, The Game Awards is about to close another impactful year of gaming, and we may assume that new footage of either a cinematic trailer, gameplay footage, or any announcement about the game will be revealed in the said event. BioWare and the TGA's team have always had a great relationship, so it's no surprise if we do see BioWare and EA drop some new content for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Platforms for Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Given the amount of time that Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been in production, of course, the game will be available on PC, but the game will be available for Next-Gen (Current-Gen) consoles such as the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation®5. It will also be available on Xbox One and PlayStation®4.

Unfortunately, the game may not be available for the Nintendo Switch since previous titles haven't been ported out to the Switch unlike other big, famous titles — with Dragon Age: The Veilguard to be delivering powerful graphics, it is most likely that the game will not be available on the said device, given its limited capabilities.

Skill Tree in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

In February 2023, BioWare released an official blog entry for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which revealed a new key concept for its gameplay: the Skill Tree system. While the article mainly detailed the creative process and the steps behind it, seemingly keen to express the complexity and difficulty, the BioWare Team has given us broad strokes on what we can generally expect. From what we can extract from the very goals they've created for themselves in the making of this feature, the Skill Tree can be expected to be powerful boons that characters can get depending on the nodes that players choose to activate. These boons are meant to be big, felt advantages, and not just mere stat bonuses for the character. Furthermore, they endeavor to make each node feel like a main boost, quite unlike usual systems where minor nodes exist in between ones that grant big advantages. Tree systems aren't necessarily at all new to the game; previous titles had Talents, Abilities, and Specializations, which all worked in a similar manner. However, the novelty of the name of this feature may lead us to assume there will be drastically new aspects, which unfortunately right we can but only speculate about. One particular speculation could be surmised in conjunction with official art previously released that showed what seems to be characters boasting an amalgamation of two known classes. Interestingly, one of the images in the blog entry showed an initial draft for a Skill Tree, which showed sets of nodes separated by color, with connecting nodes as well, all in a single tree. This and the aforementioned official artworks might suggest a combination of classes, with a Skill Tree that connects certain key traits together, allowing one to wield aspects of different classes all at once. Alas, and as seems to be the trend for news and updates for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the entry did not reveal anything specific about this new feature, so we'll have to keep on our toes.

Combat for Dragon Age: The Veilguard

From Dragon Age: The Veilguard being announced up to this point in time, there is quite a lot of speculation and opinions being laid out across the web. Looking back through its predecessors, each Dragon Age title had something new that was brought to the table: Dragon Age leaned on tactical combat, Dragon Age 2 delivered action-oriented combat, while Dragon Age Inquisition was a bit of both, giving players a bit of freedom on how they wanted to play the game.

While there is little that we know of when it comes to New Features and Mechanics, there are some elements of the game that are most likely to appear in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. For starters, BioWare is known to deliver tons of content, especially to the story of the game, expect a long story that pushes you to branch out such as interacting with the different NPCs and Companions, dialogue trees that will affect certain aspects of the game (such as the ending), an exquisite open-world to explore that features large hub areas, cities, ruins, and secret locations, as well as complex character progression when it comes to improving stats, learning magical abilities, skills, and using various equipment such as Weapons and Armor.

With all of this, multiplayer is still a game feature that we can rule out since the team is focusing on sticking to the franchise's roots, which is to deliver a successful story and single-player experience — more details for Dragon Age: The Veilguard's combat and key features will be explored once the information is available.

The Age of the Dragon

You might be wondering, should I play the previous titles before I play Dragon Age: The Veilguard? If you were to ask us, we probably would say yes so that you'll have the full experience of the series. Think of it like Mass Effect games where it's better to play the first game to see how your character grows and how your progress gets carried over throughout each title. However, if you're someone who doesn't have the time to do so or would like to just jump in the new game, then yes, it is also possible to just skip to Dreadwolf without knowing the franchise at all. Who knows, you might want to jump back into its previous titles after playing the game.

According to a community update blog that was written by BioWare, Dragon Age: The Veilguard aims to be "a game that carries forth the stories that came before it while still being a starting point for someone brand-new" which means as a player who is new to the franchise can just start their first Dragon Age experience in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. According to BioWare:

"Dragon Age is a series that puts you in the heart of a magical world, but what happens while you’re there—who lives and dies, who rises and falls, who loves and loses—that’s up to you. There are no right choices… only those you make. At the heart of every one of our games are our stories and characters. Each tale is told by the people who live in them—companions who fight at your side and foes who challenge your every move. This is core to the experiences we craft and is what we believe makes a “BioWare RPG” what it is.

Each character has their own motivations and goals that influence how the story plays out, but so do you. The Hero of Ferelden. The Champion of Kirkwall. The Herald of Andraste. Each of them marked their legacy in the annals of history, but time marches forward and the age of these heroes cannot last forever. As a friend of ours once said, “it’s time for a new hero.”."
